Hmm, not something I would expect to hear from a "reputable"
mechanic.
I'd suggest another mechanic. If possible, find a local Miata
club and ask around. The clutch in my '90 (with over 100,000
miles on her) still works smoothly. Matter of fact, it works
better than I do some mornings!
Another idea might be to replace the transmission fluid with
synthetic - that's known to smooth things out as well. Also
check the level of oil in the shifter turret - if it's dry it
could add to the problem of "sticky" shifting.

Thanks for the advice on the shifter turret. I'll probably try
that before taking it to another mechanic. I'm already running
synthetic tranny fluid.
