Only the first time around, as one of the garage articles on miata.net explains.
I can pull the radio out of my '99 in a couple of seconds. I actually have the
removal tools, for Ford-style DIN units. They are probably available at a bunch
of shops. I got them from http://www.pro-fit-intl.com/dealers/specialtytools.html
BTW, there are several ways to make use of the space where the completely
useless storage space is. I first put a CD caddy in there (from SeriousAuto),
and now have an in-dash cd changer in that space.

If he's looking for a rattle, squeak, noise, etc. as he said in his
post, he probably will have to remove the center console and the center
dash piece in order to search for the source of the noise. Just
pulling the radio probably won't do it.
