The previous owner of my Miata installed a monsterous stereo system
consisting of mis-matched components, DVD player so he could watch
"Deep Throat" on the screen while driving and a many billion watt amp
in the trunk, all installed by a drop out from plumbing school who had
absolutely no clue as to what he was about.
As I mentioned some weeks back, the DVD crap is gone, the amp is gone
and the current install is a stock 1992 Miata radio/tape player. The
headrest speakers are now working perfectly (apprentice plumber didn't
know what the wires were for so he just cut them....) but the door
speakers have the cones ripped to shreds by the amp or maybe by
vibration? Plumbing school dropout figured he didn't need all those
screws to hold the speakers, maybe one or two would be enough(!)
I need new door speakers but my budget is now shot. I understand these
are 6 1/2" speakers with 3 mounting holes and Mazda wrongly believes
they are worth wau more than speakers of that quality should cost so...
What's a good replacement speaker? Let's be a little reasonable here,
it's a convertible that almost always has the top down, it has no sound
proofing, it is capable of creating it's own racket with exhaust, some
rattles, etc. Fidelity is further compromised by cars with loud
exhaust, low riders with rap "music" cranked up, sirens, horns, etc. I
don't need or want a $5,000 sound system, I just want two good,
inexpensive 6.5" speakers that will allow me to listen to a ball game
with out the buzz I get from the torn cones.
I'd really appreciate suggestions for speakers that will bolt right in
w/o modification and won't cost too much along with information on
where I can buy such.
TIA!

Range in price from $29.95 to $199.95 per pair. I've bought from these
people before for my BMW 328 convertible (different size speakers). I don't
know about the three mounting holes, though; you will have to check each
speaker in the listing to see about its mounting.
These people: www.cruthfield.com have an on-line "what fits my car" set of
pages (although their prices are higher than some other vendors - they are a
good resource in finding out which brands and models will fit). They show
speakers for 1992 Miata ranging from $49.95 up - some of them say "a speaker
adapter bracket is required. It is included free with your speaker
purchase," so you might be better off ordering through them.

Thanks, I'll check them out.

Been there, it seems to me they are way too high...

Jeff Anderson is the miata stereo guru, he was very friendly / helpful when
I delt with him. There are phasing problems / issues with the headrest
speakers of many years of miata's. He can help you get that right (fixes
alot) and can probably point you in the right direction for the door
speakers. He recomended the Max-5 headrest speakers (great value) and also
recomended my door speakers (which required a little mod) which I've been
very happy with. He understands 'inexpensive'.
Assuming he's still into it, you can reach him through miata.net or search
the forums. I'm sure his recomendations are all over in the archives.

I wish I could remember which speakers I put in. I know I got
them from Circuit City, and they were < $100. It is
recommended that you listen to speakers since they have their
own personality. Places like Circuit City have a wall that allow
that. Also, I seem to remember that I had to drill three new holes,
and I understand that is usually the case. I put some masking tape
on the drill bit to prevent coming out at the other side of the
door. :) It was no big deal further.
Anyway, here is a place to look:

Thanks, I already looked there. There's a lot of information on some
pretty good speakers but very little on the $1.98/pair speakers(?)
Nowhere does it mention photon flow on white cars.... ;-)

Obviously, a lot of essential info is still missing from miata.net.
I remember that circuit city had a number of $60 or so speakers
that sounded perfectly fine to me. Maybe if you told them that
they were going to be installed in white Miata, so that they would
be inaudible 97% of the time due to speed, you could beat their
price down to $1.98.
Just a suggestion,

Hi,
If you are interested, I have a pair of original speakers, out of a
1994.
I have even a pair of Kenwood KFC-1738C (with original box) that I
installed and then upgraded to a set of component speakers... They fit
like a glove in the stock location: no extra drilling or bending required.
I'm in South California.
Cheers!

The thing to watch when buying door speakers for our cars is the mounting
depth, it's fairly shallow. What I have done is to go to Crutchfield dot
com, do their "What fits my car?", then go elsewhere to find a better price.
Although Crutchfield will include the nifty speaker wire adaptors so it
becomes a plug and play deal. I've heard the mentioned Kenwoods in a Miata.
That may be a good deal.

Sure, I'd be interested, could you email me with all the info such as
how much you want for them? Do you have a guess what it would cost to
ship to Phoenix, Arizona?
Just remove the NO and the SPAM to reach me.
