I'm pretty sure that the window sticker I was looking at said that both the engine and transmission were made in the US. Maybe it's more perception than reality but a lot of people regard Mazda vehicles that are made in Japan as having higher quality than those built in the US. SignatureGrant Edwards grante Yow!
