Hi all,

I've probably got the wrong group, but I'm hoping you can help me.

I have a 1989 Mazda 929 HC automatic. Most times when I place the car in
"Park", it "Parks", but the park light doesn't come on.

The car won't move (as it shouldn't when in park), but when I try to start
the car it won't! It is as if the transmission is in gear, or the battery is
flat.

After some severe moving of the gear lever back & forth until the "Park"
light finally comes on, I can eventually start the car.

The is nothing wrong with the Starter Motor, Battery, etc, so I'm guessing
it is the transmission itself.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I can fix this, or direct me to a group
that deals with 929's.

Thanks, Dave.

You've got a faulty or misadjusted neutral/park safety switch.

Thanks for that.

One question. Where is the neutral/park safety switch located (on the
transmission?) & how do I adjust/replace it?

The car will start in neutral. Does that make any difference to your
diagnosis?

Thanks again, Dave.

I'm not familiar with the 929. The switch could be anywhere from the shift
lever to the transmission, and it might not be adjustable. I would start at
the trans, looking for a plastic blob w/wires that the shifting rod or
cables run through, and work back to the shifter.
Starting in neutral is normal function.
