Wet trunk

After a period of recent rains I find that I have a wet trunk in my
recently purchased 1992 MX-5. The trunk lid rubber seal appears to be
sound and pliable. I noticed the dampness is on the upper left area of
the trunk bottom as you look at the car from the rear as well as the
lower level (presumably the water level ran to the lower level.) The
car has been stored outside in a driveway slanting down front to rear.
The position of the moisture makes me wonder whether it has to do with
drain hole in the fuel filler area. Thoughts?

The most likely reason: water from the rear window collects in the rain
rail and is channeled to the drains in the rear shelf, outboard of the
seatbelt towers. If those drains are plugged, the water overflows into
the trunk. The miata.net Garage has instructions for clearing clogged
drains.

IMO, the usual cause of clogged drains is failure to cover the folded
top with the boot. Stuff falls in there.

Every time you wash your car, check that all of the drains are working
properly. There's one behind each front wheel to drain the wiper plenum,
at least one in each door, several in each rocker panel, and one in
front of each rear wheel (for the rain rail). Clogged drains cause rust.

This is a known issue.  I had it myself on my 1994, exactly once.  (It's
been inside since then.)  Seems to be exacerbated by the position that
you mentioned -- i.e., with the front pointing up.

Rain rails and drain holess are the commonly mentioned causes.  Some
people have indicated that blocked drains lead to water in the interior,
not the trunk.  You might want to search on miata.net.
