I have a 2000 mazda 626, automatic transmission that will not go in gear.
The shifting lever in on the center console, it will slide forward and
backward through all the gears but will not engage.  Could this be a
transmission problem or maybe a linkage problem. Any Ideas?

Does it come out of Park or engage into ANY gear? If so, sounds like
tranny problem. Also, check the fluid. If not, it may be the
linkage/cable. Could have come loose. Hopefully, you have already taken
it to a repair shop before getting/waiting for an answer here.
