I'm recently getting a knocking sound (ticking approx. every fourth piston
run) as soon as the engine is fully warmed up.  Yesterday I realized that my
last oil filter is only an off-the-shelf thingee.  Should I worry or just
replace the filter?

Don't know what year your Miata is, but it sounds like it's
time to change the oil and filter.  My 1990 starts this
around 200 miles before she's due to have her oil changed.

Consider it a built-in oil-change reminder. <g>

agreed, surely he didn't mean he was considering changing just the filter,
right?
