Greetings, all....ain't been around in a while so happy to see things
still active.

While coasting down a 3 mile hill, I heard a "clunk" from the rear
following by a whirring sound.  Had a pretty good idea what the prob
was and prayed the thing would get me the next 50 miles to home.  Made
it to 7 miles short of my destination when the rear end gave up the
ghost.

Now, I'm looking at replacing the rear.  The car is a '91 with the
standard rear end.  I've been abusing it for the last 63k miles, and
the car has 162k, so it surely doesn't owe me a thing, especially
since it's been running around 6lbs boost.  Given current restraints,
I'm looking at the low-cost replacement part (an original) for around
$240 shipped.  I'd love, however, to do the entire upgrade to the 1.8
rear, but so far all necessary parts seem to run in excess of $800.

Anybody heard of any good deals on the 1.8 rear drivetrain?  Already
tried ebay, to no real avail.

Keep trying ebay every couple of days, stuff shows up from time to time.

Buy a badly wrecked 1.8?  Even a fire would probably leave the diff intact.

Try www.car-part.com
Look for "carrier" and "differential".
I got lucky and paid $425 shipped.
