My understanding is that 1997 STO had A/C as an option. Is it possible
to tell, off the cuff, whether a Miata has had A/C installed or not?
For example, do Miatas without the A/C option not have an A/C button in
the console?

Well--
Look thru the grille and see if the condenser coil is present in front of
the radiator.
Open the hood and look for the A/C piping and service valves.
Press the button with the engine running and see if the A/C works!
Just because the A/C button is there doesn't mean that the A/C works.

Yes, the Miatas without the AC option do not have an AC button in the
console.
