Got a mailer last week advertising a Mazda employee pricing program.  I
haven't had a chance to get to a dealer yet, just wondering if anyone knows
the details on this.  In particular, does it include 2006 models?  I'm
looking at a Mazda 5 as a possible replacement for my current OTM.

um, does anyone else find it odd that Mazda in the same year added a Mazda
5 to its line-up and dropped the "Miata" from the MX-5 name..

All this employee pricing crap is just another gimic and it seems to be
working. Now everybody's doing it. Why? Because the average super consumer
(american) is so enthralled with getting a 'bargain', that the mere
insinuation that one is available will trot out tons of people, mostly
paying more than they would have previously, to grab up the so called
bargain!

Sorry to sound so harsh but these marketting ploys should be viewed for just
what they are! A friend of mine told me that his dad (a 30+ yr employee at
GM) had purchased a new car every two years for......forever. Only twice did
he use the employee discount, every other time being able to negotiate a
better deal w/o it. I'm just saying don't be a lemming and go out and sign
on the dotted line assuming you're getting a super deal.

Good luck,
Chris

Bravo!!!

If they weren't making money at it, they wouldn't spend
millions advertising it.  When will people figure this out?

I certainly have no illusions that they're giving cars away here.  I did
some shopping before the Employee Pricing thing came out, so I have a
baseline.  If the program applies to the car I'm interested in (the '06
Mazda 5 in this case), then I can go back and see what difference there
is between what they were willing to do a month ago and what they can do
now.

While so called sales are often times as much hype as bargain, there is
usually something to be gained even if it is less than they would have
you believe.  Even if the only difference is that you have to spend less
time negotiating to get a reasonable price, that is still a gain in my
mind.  Don't know about you, but if I can buy a car for $x today w/ 1/2
hr of negotiating when it would have taken 3 hrs to get it for that same
$x a month ago, I'm happy that I've just saved myself 2.5 hrs.

FWIW, you might want to try going through Costco (if you are
a member).  Their web site will give you a dealer referral
for $300 over invoice, no dickering.  When I got my Miata,
that was a few hundred better than I did with a different
dealer but after a lot of haggling.

$300 over dealer invoice can actually end up being about $1000 over dealer
cost.

I bought both my Miata's new, and they were both at least $1000
below invoice.  But, after holdbacks and incentives were added
in, the dealer still made several hundred dollars.
