I've just turned 230,000km. in my '91 Miata and the seats are starting to
look a little the worse for the wear.
Before I start looking around for suitable replacements could anyone advise
me whether or not there are compatible seats from other Mazda models of the
same vintage?
Thanks,
Peter Murphy,

I doubt anything else will be narrow enough to fit, and nothing is
likely to be a simple bolt-in job. When mine get ratty enough, I'll
install Katzskin replacement covers.

I did not know that nowadays they judge the age of humans by mileage
too. Makes me glad that I only live 3 miles or so from work. :)

I share Lanny's doubt.
The conventional answer is to install leather seat covers. See miata.net
(garage, product reviews) for more on it. In the old days, leather skins
from a crazy red italian used to be popular. I have not heard much about
those recently; I wonder whether they ran out of crazy red italians. It is
probably way past time they passed a law requiring seat cover providers to
throw the young ones they catch back in.

Heaven forfend, they might have to start using crazy green or blue
Italians.

Are they still slaughtering those poor baby naugas for their hydes?
Personally, my favorite leather is unborn sperm whale (adults are prone
to unsightly barnacles and giant squid bites).

I always wondered what the Beach Boys were on about with their
"naugahyde bucket seats in front and back". What *is* naugahyde, bcause
we don't call it that in England? Is it suede? Alcantara?

It's a brand of vinyl upholstery fabrics.

No, the naugas shed their hides naturally.

Ah, you must have missed the part of the brochure where it says
"Barnacles and giant squid bites are part of the natural
beauty of your new genuine sperm whale skin article. These
are not defects and make each genuine sperm whale skin
product a truly unique heirloom to be treasured and handed
down for generations to come."

Of course, that's what Uniroyal wants you to think. The bastards.

You know, about five seconds after I clicked the Post button, I thought,
"Hmm, I bet Grant will write back about the natural beauty of barnacles
and giant quid bites." Thanks so much for fulfilling my every
expectation.
BTW, never trust any statement that describes a product as "truly
unique." It's either unique or it isn't, and prattling on about truth
won't make an absolute *more* absolute.
At least I don't hear Ricardo Montalban whining about "fine Coreenthian
leather." Which is probably made from the steenking remains of
Hannibal's elephants.

here's a nice compilation of compatible aftermarket seats... but when you
add in the mounting hardware they get pricey.
http://www.flyinmiata.com/tech/seats.asp
yet re-upholstering your existing seats is probably the way to go. i don't
see the justification in spending upwards of 600usd on the katzen leather
seats on a 10+ year old car that isn't a show car when for just over 200usd
you can get 'hampton leather' (aka high quality vinyl) from aabestco.com.
this gives you an idea of what is involved in re-upholstering them yourself
http://www.miata.net/garage/upholstery.html
as far as taking newer nb seats and fitting them into the na i hear that it
works but seem to recall an issue with the seatbelt... all said,
re-upholstering in vinyl seems to make the most sense to me.

I remember vividly how disappointed I was when I drove my
brand new Miata with leather seats home from the
dealership - My butt kept sliding about in corners! I've
since gotten used to having to adjust my seating position
every so often and to cinching down the seat belt in the
twisties, but I still miss the "glued in place" feeling the
cloth seats gave me. If I were to re-upholster my Miata, I
would opt for a fabric. I might even look into using one
designed for outdoor furniture (i.e. patio umbrellas). They
are very durable, available in many colors, can tolerate a
rain shower, and can be scrubbed (and even bleached) if need
be. Just a thought....

Not to mention how not and sweaty leather is in the summertime.
I ended up putting sheapskin seat covers over the leather in my
96M.

I definitely made sure I got fabric seats when I bought my
second Miata (2003 Shinsen).

that is a really interesting comment.
i was thinking about the vinyl (hampton leather) seat covers because of
their custom fit and good looks and because they don't cost much more seat
covers that often just look like, well, seat covers. but they probably are
just as slippery as leather, something i never thought of before. any
suggestions on fabric re-upholstery that looks as good as the original?
thanks.

Heck, who ever said that the OEM fabric was good looking, I think it's one
of the weakest points of the 1st gen miatas. Fades horribly. The aabest.com
site does have a fabric option (at least inserts) but the site is horribly
lacking in any type of photo gallery where you can see material / fit and
finish up close of the different options.

If you do decide to go stock anyway, I have a pair of black seats from a
1990 model that look practically brand-new, no tears, no stains, and a
very dark black color. They were covered for almost the entire life of
the car and the driver was small, so the cushions are even in great shape.
I was going to put them in my 1991 model, but I am thinking about either
selling that car or putting racing seats in if I keep it, so they will
probably be listed on Ebay soon.
