I've got some nasty whiring sound that appears to be coming from the dash
area. It comes and goes a bit but varies with speed not engine speed which
leads me to believe it's the speedo.

My question is, what's the chances of ridding myself of this menace? Does
the cable disconnect at the back of the instrument and at the tranny? Can I
lube it from each end and hope to get lube to migrate all the way or is
there a better way? Is there anything to lubricants designed specifically
for this or is that the equivilant of paying big bucks to but 'clutch
fluid'?

TIA
Chris

You can disconnect the cable at the back of the speedometer and grease
it.  It's not very easy to get to, you'll need a manual that tells how
to remove the instrument pod, then follow the directions here:

Perfect! I think I have regular powdered graphite, I wonder if that would
work. I guess the liquid allows this lubricant to travel further than a dry
powder could on its own, makes sense.

Hi Chris,
I did the "lube trick" on my '91 using the "liquid Cable lube". I undid
the cable at booth ends, used a hair drier to warm the cable as I put
the lube in. I used a drll moter to turn the cable so it would work its
way down in side. ALL the noise and needle bounce has gone away now. (It
started about 100,000 miles and I have 134,000 now.) Good luck with it.
It is worth the time to do it right. :-)
