I've got a '90 Miata and the other day while driving I felt
something hit my left foot.

When I stopped, I found what looked like a broken, plastic washer.

There are three things I notice

1. When I depress the clutch, it makes a "click."

2. The clutch has more play in it.

3. I have to depress the clutch further to engage/disengage.

Any ideas?

Clutch pedal bushing. Kinda like a shoulder-washer - Bolt goes through
the bushing, bushing and bolt go through the (slightly oversized hole)
in the clutch pedal, clutch pedal swings straight when you mash it,
instead of flopping from side to side, yet doesn't bind up from the bolt
being torqued down hard at the pivot point.

(Betcha if you pay close attention, you notice side-to-side play as well
as more "direction of pressure" play)
