I've been playing around with a radio from a 2000 Protoge, the single
DIN unit AM/FM CD.

I haven't figured out how to make it work yet, I'm not completely sure
it does work correctly?????

I can set the clock, play a CD, listen to AM or FM but I can't set the
push buttons to a station and there's some odd behavior that may or may
not be OK?  What do the various push buttons do?  Some are obvious,
some aren't...

Can someone start by telling me how to set a push button to a station
on that thing?

Or maybe copy the essential page(s) from an owner's manual (they used
this in lots of Mazdas) and post 'em or email 'em?

I am not sure about your particular radio. Most of the newer radios will
memorize the station you are on by pushing the selection button and holding.
The station will disappear and come back on after it is stored in memory
(three to five seconds), or you may hear a beep to indicate the button is
programmed.

Yup, that's how I do it on other radios but it doesn't work on this
one.  I don't know if it's broke or what?

Again, it's a 2000 from FMS.  It came from a 2000 Protoge and is the
same as used in 2000 Miatas as well.

If you register at:
http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/displayOwnersHome.action

you reputedly gain access to online owner's manuals. I have not tried
this myself. Might be worth a try.

Yup, I did that some time back and.... they'll only let me see a 1992
owner's manual, I have that but, of course, it shows how to work the
1992 1.5 DIN AM/FM Cassette player like the one in my car.

To get another manual I'd have to register a different car and that
requires the VIN so I can't do that. <sigh>

if so i suspect (just guessing here) that the 'auto/m' button is the key to
resolving this problem... it is likely that if you hold this button for a
couple of seconds it automatically programs all five pre-set station buttons
with the strongest radio signals it finds after scanning the radio spectrum.
this was a popular feature that is handy to people that travel often and
want to quickly reprogram all the buttons.  but that isn't what you are
looking to do...  you just want to progam stations into individual pre-set
buttons.  i suspect you do this by tuining in the station manually and then
pressing the 'auto/m' button once and then then pre-set button number which
you want to store that station (1-5).  try it out and let us know if it
works.

That's it.

Good guess, doesn't work.

Nope, I found out you just tune to the station you want and press and
hold the proper pre-set button for a few seconds.  That doesn't work
either.

Looks like I've got some radio fixing to do....

ps. if that dosen't work then visit ebay and lift a vin number from the
make/model car that the radio is from... and then go back to mazda to get
the correct manual.

Great idea!

"The owner's manual is not available for download, you can get one from
your dealer."
Christopher Muto - 04 Mar 2006 01:30 GMT
too bad on both counts...
the radio is made by matsushita, better known as panasonic... and i looked
on their web site where they have an large number of manuals available (look
under customer support, and then manuals...) but i did not see this model.
oh well.  you might be better off just buying something inexpensive from
crutchfield who includes a harness kit and any misc cosmetic trim pieces for
free if necessary (on units over $130 i think)...

Current radios are so unbelievably FUGLY I can't stand to have one in
my car.

I got the car with one of those ugly pieces installed as part of the
deal, it came out almost as soon as it was put in and now I have the
original AM/FM Cassette which I'll probably stick with for now.  I'd
prefer a CD player but it's gotta look right and that means it's
just about got to be from Mazda.

When was the last time that there was a release by "The FM Duals"?
I think I saw them in concert once. ;-)

Yesterday, at their live concert in my driveway. Their range is
astonishing, all the way up to 7200 rpm. I'm particularly fond of
"Eighty In Third," but if I ever hear "Lanny Missed A Shift" again it'll
be too soon.

"Lanny Missed A Shift" is a sad lament, but "Eighty in Third" is a great
top 40 hit.
Have you heard the mix version of "Eighty In Third" with the added
vocals from a screaming passenger? It adds a lot to the song in my opinion.

Indeed it does. Especially when the hard-driving percussion solo on my
right shoulder comes in. Best performed in a curve marked "SAFE SPEED
35."

FMS is Ford/Mazda/Sanyo, it was a joint venture now wholly owned by
Sanyo and I can't find any info on Sanyo's site regarding any product
that is discontinued???
Christopher Muto - 04 Mar 2006 16:37 GMT
this one listed on ebay says matsushita (aka panasonic)...
http://tinyurl.com/gc866

i agree with your about how ugly the new radio are these days... but clarion
(good quality and also sold as head amps for the high end mcintosh brand)
have a new line out that are completely black. and this one from the older
line is pretty plain looking and a great value at $129 with all the
necessary acessories, sounds excellent too.

They look exactly alike.  The Panasonic was used in 1998 and 1999, the
FMS was used in 2000.

If there was info on the Panasonic, it would apply to the FMS as well I
think.

Why not e-mail a poster or webmaster about how to set the unit?

Well, they didn't have my owners manual available online but they were 'kind
enough' to tell me that I could purchase one at any nearby dealer! Only took
10 FREAKIN minutes to 'register'. My poor car came w/o an owners manual. Not
a biggy but I was looking forward to thumbing through it online.

They DO have some nice merchandise. ;-)
