We have a Mazda Xedos 2l V6. Yesterday as I was driving the temperature
gauge shot up to the red. I pulled over asap and when I stopped it went
back down. Put 1 litre of water in (in the dark )and all seemed well.
Carried on and a bit later the heater blew cold for a couple of miles.Just
got home when the temp. gauge went up again but no obvious coolant leaks. I
have checked the coolant level and fuses and all are ok.Any suggestions
gratefully received.Many thanks.

Sounds like the thermostat is sticking closed. Replace it.
