The most common ways to let a GPS help you save on gas is by asking it
to help you find the quickest, not the shortest route.

Saving gas with a GPS (or mapping software) isn't a myth, it'll route
you around accidents and road construction, it'll help you find shorter
routes and, for those who need it, a hand held will help you get out of
a restaurant!

No kidding, I had dinner with a friend once who had just got his brand
new GPS device and was so intrigued with it when we were leaving he had
his head down staring at the screen, I asked what he was doing, he said
he wanted to see if it could navigate him to the parking lot!

Some folks just go nuts over a new toy....
