6 Speed Grinding?

I have a 1990 5 speed which shifts "like butter." The 2003 6 speed I
recently bought grinds gears when the weather is even slightly
cold--e.g., 50 degrees!  Double clutching stops this, but of course is
not much fun.

Is this normal, or are the synchronizers bad? Will Red Line transmission
fluid solve the problem? Even if it did, is this a Mazda problem?

I found a similar feel with my '02 SE. Switched to Redline and all is good
now.

I have an 03 SE 6 speed that only grinds going into 2nd gear (up  or down).
To get a grate free shift, I have to pause significantly in neutral before
going into 2nd gear.  The other gears shift easily.  I put in Red Line MTL
and the problem only got worse.  The rest of the gears got a little
"notchier" with the Red Line, so I changed back to dino oil.  Now, I am
almost back to where I started.  I'll be taking it to the dealer next week.

I do prefer the 6 speed, problem or not.  Except for 2nd gear, it shifts as
smoothly as my 2000 5 speed.  At 70 MPH the engine turned 4000 RPM in top
gear with the 5 speed and only 3300 RPM in 6 speed.

A word on Redline MTL...

About 15 cars in our club did an oil change day last year, all switched
to redline in the tranny and diffs. We called Redline and talked to a
guy named Dave to make sure we were putting the right oil in the
gearboxes. He said to use MT-90 and not MTL in Miata 5/6 speeds. He
mentioned people were having "issues" with MTL, and that MT-90 was the
correct synth oil for the gearbox. All who changed myself included,
agree the shifting is indeed better with the Redline MT-90. My '02 SE 6
speed had a smoothness issue when cold, since the MT-90 change, smooth
sailing or more correctly shifting.

Ugh!  I previously mentioned MTL-90.  I meant to say
MT-90.  Rod is totally on-target here.

Yup.  My experience is 100% consistent with this.  I did
both the tranny and diff; make sure you get the correct Redline
oil for a limited-slip diff if you have one (like the Torsen in
the '02 SE).

Now if you realy want a smooooth shifting 6 speed...try the Mazdaspeed
Miata. I am not sure if it is the shot-peened gears, but is it ever a
smooth shifting gearbox.

I have an'03 SE with the LSD.  Which Redline do I use?

Thanks.

Redline MTL90.  Just do it.  I suppose I shouldn't brag
that Redline HQ is about 10 minutes drive from me, on a
pleasantly curvy road that parallels the (not curvy)freeway.

But, whatever, get a couple quarts of Redline tranny oil
and install it in your '03.

It worked wonders for my '02 SE.

Of course, I meant to write:

Redline MT-90.  Just do it.

That's better.

Yup.  75W90.  I have an extra quart of it, if you're nearby.
But if you're nearby, you can easily stop at Redline, like I did ;-)

I have an 03 SE 6 speed.  With the factory dino oil, it shifted fine except
when going into 2nd gear (up or down), when it grated.  It happend when
fully warm, but was worse when cold.  I put in Red Line MTL (I know, wrong
stuff!) and things got worse.

Suddenly, at about 9700 miles, second gear became almost as smooth as the
other gears when even slightly warm and a lot better when cold (40 deg F).
I was about to take it in to the dealer, but now I have little to complain
about.  Any ideas about what happened?
