Hey...is there a Resident Expert here?
In the Toyota group we are fortunate to have 2 MDTs and a former Factory
Rep, and in the Chrysler/Dodge group there is also an MDT.

But, I digress. I bought a 1989 Mazda 626 today, and the most burning
question I have right now is, is the 2.2 Liter engine Interference? We
don't know when the timing belt was changed...if ever, and I'd hate to
blow an engine over a $25 belt!

Thanks!

It is an interference engine. Go here and click on "Timing Belt
Replacement Guide"

Thanks.

I actually found that out by going to AutoZone and looking up the parts I
need. When I came to the timing belt it had a note, Interference Engine.

I used to work at CarQuest, and we would get that information on our parts
screen when we would look up the belts. Thank Autozone for making this
public!

No problem. I have been generally impressed with the local Autozone
here. Of course, these places exhibit variable consistency due to the
coming and going of people. This Autozone seems to have the same people
now that they had a year ago. Maybe they are doing something right.

I hope the belt replacement went smoothly.

Cluck-cluck...I chickened out and paid some friends at a local shop to do
it. Changed the water pump, too...
