Odd sound from 89 626 2.2l

When I started it up this morning, there was a loud sort of 'screeching',
seemingly coming from the rear of the engine, apparently right under the
vavle cover or in the part behind the valve cover that extends to the
distributor.

Anyone have an idea what this might be? I'm afraid it may be the camshaft,
but hoping someone has experience with this.

It's probably not anything mechanical.  Machanical parts tend to
make clicky clacky or bang bang noises.  A squeal is likely a
vacuume leak or a sliping alternator belt.

Kinda sounds like a bearing galling...  :(
