Replacing Idle Speed Adjuster

Hey gang-

So one of the numerous little issues my '79 300TD has is that the idle
speed adjuster cable is broken.  It's disconnected from the linkage that
would do the idle speed adjustment on the engine, and so I'd like to
replace it now that it's getting colder and I'm running ever more veggie
oil as fuel.

Unfortunately, I can't dig up useful information on doing this in the CD
manuals that I have.  I am not clear on how much of the dashboard I'll
need to pull, although there are a few jobs that I could get done while
the dash is out.  (Namely, get replace or otherwise fix the dash
brightness control, and possibly align the hour hand on the clock, if
possible.)

Anyhow, I can get the cable from Autohaus for like $30, but since the
manual doesn't appear to have any documentation on this bit of kit I'm
not sure if there are other parts that I'm also likely to need.  The
knob on the dash appears to work (the cable moves in and out as I twist
it, anyway), so beyond anything akward with replacing the cable on that
end, I'm mostly concerned with what all I need to make sure I have on
the engine side of the connection.

Any info, oh glorious keepers of knowledge?

thanks,
-tom!

If the plastic end is broken, replace it. MB supplies a split replacement end piece.

Thanks.  I went to the dealer and pointed at the pretty pictures that I
wish I could get, and the parts will set me back like $10.  I'm guessing
the installation is fairly straight forward once I have the parts
in-hand?

Ok so I have the part, but I must be missing something because this
thing has a slot so I can put the cable into it easily, but what holds
the cable on the other end?  Should I just fashion a clamp of some sort
on the end, or perhaps even tie a knot in it?  Also, how tight should
this be against the linkage?  I fear that if it's snug it'll be fighting
against the shutoff valve.

thanks,
-tom!
