The Turbo's transmission differs from the non turbo transmission. The
non turbo starts off in 2nd gear by default whereas the turbo
transmission idles in 2nd but automatically downshifts to 1st gear upon
throttle application and release of the brakes - that's done for
improved acceleration. There may also be internal differences in terms
of heavier duty parts etc. to carry the turbo's torque.
I suggest the thing to watch for - further - is your car's pressure rod
or cable from the throttle linkage to the transmission and its vacuum
connections to the existing transmission and to find a box to match
those. Why try to reinvent something that's already been invented and works!
You want like for like.

Thanks, thats helpful info. I didn't realize the shifting
difference. I will take a couple pix and take them with me.
[hadn't thought of that prior to your post]
Another question: Is there a way to make my old 300cd start
in first? If it had a turbo trans? Thanks again, -Gar

Take the transmission number off the old box - that's what you'll need.
Look for a number similar to: 722.120 W4 B 025 (from '80 300SD box)
As to a retrofit of the CD - forget it. Rather, manually shift it into L
at a dead stop to gain 1st gear. Start off, then, appropriately, shift
to S and immediately BACK to L to hold 2nd, then, appropriately, shift
to S for 3rd and D for 4th. There you have it - 1st gear start off, but
you do the shifting.
