i have a 2001 c240 when i drive the car it has a very rough idle. if you
just drive slowly its okay. if you get on the pedal at all the check
engine light starts flashing and you lose almost all power. it then wants
to and does stall. i replaced the alternator and it didn't seem to help.it
sat for a month and then i think it was ran out of gas. i've tried fuel
injector cleaner and nothing helps. could this just be the fuel filter?
any suggestions?

Does this sound like a fuel problem or electric problem please help.

Your information is contradictory - it has a rough idle yet is OK if not
driven aggressively. Which is it?

When was it last tuned up? How many miles on the motor and what else
have you done to it?

An engine that quits after aggressive driving or long hill climbing
usually does so for lack of fuel - fuel starvation, most often due to a
clogged fuel filter. Why not start there.

Rough idle is nothing uncommon - MB's with automatic gearboxes idle at 500
rpm, and that seems to be very rough for engine, but in fact isn't.Your
problem is probably fuel or/and air intake system. When did you last changed
fuel filter and air filter? When driving and accelerating slow, can you
reach, for example, speed of 70 mph and keep it or even accelerate still,
but very slow? If so, it may be that fuel filter is clogged.

already changed fuel filter.took it to mb shop and they suggested spark
plugs, working on them now. old baush's very rough. replacing w/ngk
platinums.

If the check lights are warning why dont you have them let reading the
error memory?

I had a similar problem with a c2005 c240 awd. after a week or so with the
dealer, a minute hairline crack was discovered in a tiny plastic fitting
somewhere in the fuel line. my work was covered by warranty. I suggest you
let your dealer's mechanics make an inspection, if you trust them and, I
hope you have an extended warranty .

Refill the car and check for fuel leak. Your car has OBD2 computer... hook
up scanner and read the codes off it. You can use the scanner free at
Autozone.
