Greetings fellow Benz enthusiasts,
How does one remove the alternator Does it come out with its
"suround" ?And what is the purpose of the large round steel bar that
spans the width of the car from under the battery to the fuse box?

That's the stabilizer bar a/k/a sway bar. Its ends are attached to each
front wheel so that as a wheel's spring compresses in a turn the bar
lifts the opposite side's wheel to reduce the body's height and so its
lean.

Thanks!  A thorough cleaning of the engine compartment revealed some
surface rust in the area below the battery tray, and it is on the
mounts for that bar.  So I was going to take the brackets off and
clean and rust proof em.
