Also be sure to lube the mast regularly. I use a silicone based bike
chain oil (just becuase I had it around) and that works well.
Otherwise it will begin to stick again remarkably quickly.

Thanks. I had to do the "hold down" excercise a couple of times, and
also lubed the mast well, and it is now extending and retracting fully
without help.
