'92 300D fuel economy expectations

I'm averaging ~28mpg doing typical real estate biz driving; suburban, not
much freeway. I've heard stories of 35-40 mpg, is that a bunch of hot air
or do I have room for improvement?

You are on the average... There is some room for improvement but that would
require some work and money... such as the fuel injectors... change out to
rebuilt unit or rebuild it would yield good improvement.

Some Startron in the fuel tank would be good to kill off algae that is
growing inside the tank...

Injector timing and timing chain inspection as part of tuneup helps too...
depending on the mileage you have on the engine... timing chain need to be
replaced for optimal performance and safety.

Lastly, turbo banjo bolt need to be cleaned... make sure turbo is
functioning properly.

Thanks! Does anyone do extra precise injector rebuilds better than the
factory ones? I know I have some choices with my TDI but MB doesn't seem to
attract much in the way of aftermarket performance stuff.

I started using Startron a month ago in addition to the Redline I dose it
with at every fillup. Seems to make a difference.

225,000 miles. I'm probably due for a timing chain. My MB trained indy mech
isn't too concerned about it and she runs pretty strong.

So I've heard but I've seen a friend of mine snake a new chain from the top
without removing the front cover. Apparently it takes a deft touch that
only busting a flat rate manual will teach you to do.

Diesel injector wear out because it is under extreme pressure so 225,000
miles will wear it out. The spray pattern is not as optimal as a rebuilt
one.

As far as timing chain goes... if it breaks, you are in real trouble.... so
it is a preventive maintenance thing and you are right on the shortcut
method.

Is this engine an interferance design? In other words, if the timing chain
breaks, are you going to be bending valves and possibly holing a piston?

you would only see mileage like that on prolonged highway runs, I
managed 39.5 mpg @ an average speed of 70 mph on a recent drive from
NJ to FL, I probably couldn' ve done better if I slowed down a bit ,
2005 e320 cdi
