Could anyone tell me whether passenger and driver side ext. door
handles are 107's are interchangeable, or does the driver's side have
something that  controls the vacuum locking mechanism differently.

Thanks

They are left and right if you have the factory alarm. With the alarm
system, if you put the right handle on the left door you will arm the alarm
when you unlock the door. The alarm microswitch is built into the handle.
