Hi there,
With snow storm in toronto area, snow stayed on the rear windshield
although I had the rear defroster on all the time. I drove about 50km,
it took me close to 2 hours and the snow did not melt.
I called MB dealer and he said that its not defroster but defogger. It
does not heat the windshield and thats why snow stayed there. Is he
right? If this is the case then how do I get rid of the snow and see
behind?
Please advise.
Thank you.

Free the outer air intake openings at the the front windshield from
snow and ice. Be certain that the fan is blowing enough air.
Switch on the electric rear winshield heating.
Open a gap at the rear windows or the sunroof to allow free air flow
through cabin to the rear window.
Switch heating temperature and fan speed to the defrost maximum, set air
distibution switch to direction up+horizontal.
Open the three vents in the dashboard middle and at both sides and
adjust the fins so that the hot stream blows directly to the rear window.
If you still dont see anything in the rear mirror, defrost the mirror first.
If there is still no way to look out of the car you may dig your car out
of the snow and clean the windows with brushes and icescraper prior to
this procedure.
If your windshield wiper does not cope with the amount of snow coming
down per cycle and begins to press it into the air intakes of the
ventilation system you may switch to inner circulation.
Thats the moment to consider the snowmobile or skiing alternative.

Sure, I will try these things on my way back home this evening. The
thing is its not the dry hard snow but is more like a slush.
Temperature here is close to 0C and I did not expect slush to say on
the window.
I hope your recommendations will work as stopping every 10 minutes on
highway to clean the rear window is not an option for me.
Is dealer right that is not a defroster but a defogger and does not
heat the window?
Thanks.

Get out and scrape it off?

Agreed... you need a scraper to remove hard ice or snow from windshield or
rear glass... even side windows. To make this easier, heating up the
windshield and rear window slightly helps
If all fails, then you need the deicer that is sold in spray can... That
will remove all ice and fast... then use scraper to get the rest off.

Look in your owners manual. It is a defogger!
