I have a 1999 C280. The check engine light seems to come on when the gas
tank gets down to about half full. The light goes out when I fill the
tank. The car has no other symptoms. What is going on? and how do I fix it?

Thanks,

EJ in NJ

Read out the specific errorcode. Probably you will find an fuel gauge
sensor error.

If you have the digital climate control, you can read it there:

Kenneth,

Thank you for your reply, and the link.

I read the information from the link and went through the statistics
check (#CCstats), and the read error codes (#CCers). Everything went
according to the instructions in the link. The "check engine" light was
on prior to the check and after the check, and yet the checkout
indicated that there were no errors.

Can you/anyone tell me what this means?

1999 C280 Sport

Thanks

whew! Haven't had that good a laugh in a while !

On a Mercedes a check engine light on means it is time to go to the
stealership and get it turned off and pay for it. And then go back to
get it turned off again and pay for it. And the go back to the
stealership to get it turned off again and pay for it. And then ....

Well, first of all, a humble apology, the link I provided you with does
not show CEL codes. I had copied that link from one of the boards I
frequent, and had not tested it myself. That procedure provides Climate
Control diagnostics, not the engine's. Look at the bright side, you now
know how to get diagnostics for the climate control system.

In the mean time, either buy an ODBII code reader, or have the code read
for you. Many stores, ie Autozone, will read the code for you for free.

It looks like Autozone is the place for me.

Thanks,

There was a time where contaminated gas was sold... and the result was bad
fuel gauge sensor... a couple of years ago, I think.

Have you tried replacing your fuel cap to see if this solve the problem? If
this still does not fix it, try a big bottle of fuel injector cleaner in the
tank to see if it clears out the fuel gauge error.

Thanks for your comments

This morning I had the annual New Jersey Auto inspection. The "check
engine" light was out. As part of the Inspection they check the gas cap.
I guess it was OK since they passed the car. Driving home the "check
engine" light came on again.

You can go to the Autozone and get their OBD II Scanner and hook it up to
your car to get the readings. They loan it out for free.

Thanks for the info. I'll try it.
