My 2002 C240 goes into gear with a thud and won't upshift. As I
suspect it's a problem with the transmission control unit/module,
before I take it to the dealer, I was wondering if anyone knew where I
could get a new or rebuilt module if it turns out that I need one.
Google doesn't turn up anything.

Thanks very much in advace.

It is rarely ever the transmission brainbox. First thing I would do is
change the filter and fluid and see what happens when you do so. Alot of
time on newer car, this is all you need. There is no such thing is lifetime
fluid... those who believes that will need transmission overhaul anytime
after 100,000 miles.

On modern electronic transmission, it can be individual electronic part that
go bad and dealer will just change that only part. Do you have any 'Check
Engine' light?

Thanks a lot Tiger. Yes, I am getting a "check engine" light. What's
up with that?

Thanks again

Your engine has a problem eg. wrong data from temp, oxygen or air mass
sensors. The computer switches to the emergency program which lets you
the possibilita to drive to a service station at moderate rpm, velocity
and acceleration.

Actually no Roland, Check Engine light also warns you of transmission and
other systems error also. The modern OBD2 system also incorporate CAS system
which ties everything together.

Travis, you need to get an OBD2 scanner... you can use one for free from
Autozone store... or you can borrow from any of your friend who might have
one. We need the codes to find out what problem might exist.

Right again, TIger. When the tech at the local MB dealer tried to read
the codes, he found that the battery voltage was too low, because it
had two bad cells. Not that surprising, I guess, since the battery was
almost 6 yrs. old, and replacing it seems to have taken care of the
shifting problem and the check engine light -- at least so far.

I never would have suspected that low battery voltage could cause a
shifting problem, because I assumed the car's electrical system was
running off the alternator when the engine was running. But the
service mgr. said that the battery still needs to have sufficient
voltage to run the computerized system. So, we'll see.

I failed to mention that  I was also getting an ESP (Electronic
Stability Program) fault, which turned out to be a lateral sway
sensor.

So, right now, the problems seem to have been fixed, and hopefully
they;ll stay that way.

Thanks for the help.

Little tidbits really does help diagnose the problem...

When my folk's E320 had a battery problem... we kept getting ESP, BAS and
SRS trouble indication... all solved when you replace the battery.
