Right again, TIger. When the tech at the local MB dealer tried to read
the codes, he found that the battery voltage was too low, because it
had two bad cells. Not that surprising, I guess, since the battery was
almost 6 yrs. old, and replacing it seems to have taken care of the
shifting problem and the check engine light -- at least so far.
I never would have suspected that low battery voltage could cause a
shifting problem, because I assumed the car's electrical system was
running off the alternator when the engine was running. But the
service mgr. said that the battery still needs to have sufficient
voltage to run the computerized system. So, we'll see.
I failed to mention that I was also getting an ESP (Electronic
Stability Program) fault, which turned out to be a lateral sway
sensor.
So, right now, the problems seem to have been fixed, and hopefully
they;ll stay that way.
Thanks for the help.

Little tidbits really does help diagnose the problem...
When my folk's E320 had a battery problem... we kept getting ESP, BAS and
SRS trouble indication... all solved when you replace the battery.
