sl320/500 AC evaporator replacement?

It appears that I have a AC R134 leak at the evaporator. When inspecting
with an UV lamp I found traces of the dye at the drain tube from the
evaporator housing . Are the odds that the evaporator itself is bad or just
the connecting hoses at the evaporator? I was able to get my hands on a T/M
sheet and it shows that evaporator replacement is about 12 hours. So it
sounds like a major task.
Does anybody have any experience with this task? I have not been able to get
my hands on a "service manual"for this car that is any good.
Is dash disassembly required or is the heating/cooling assy accessable from
the engine compartment ?.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide

I have an SL500, 1997.  The Dealer told me the same thing....... est to fix is
$3,000.
Dealer said it is a common thing in these cars.......
Let me know how you come out.  I might get with the MB rep to find if I can get
any compensation.......

Have you had other problems?  I have had several that have cost me a bunch of
bucks.....

On my '96 E-300 I decided 5 weeks ago to give a try to a sealer
"Keep-it-Kool".  So far so good.
If my '92 SL-500 comes up with the type of problem you're facing, I will do
the same.
Before trying the sealer I went on their Web site and what I read seemed to
promise that if it does not work, no harm is done to the system.

Thanks for the Keep-it-Kool sealer tip. I will try this  before I take on
the expensive repair job.

hi Peter
Please let us know if Keep-it-cool works
Peter W. Peternouschek - 14 Apr 2004 16:23 GMT
I have not been able to get the Keep-it-cool product. I was able to get a
similar product called Sperseal premium marketed by Cliplight. It appears to
be about the same. Has anyone tried this product?

I will try it once my neighbor gets back from vacation and I can borrow his
vacuum pump.

The real name is Keep-it-Kool.  I got it easily. They got a website, that I
found through GOOGLE.

I will know if the product works for the long run when hot weather is back
in Canada.

All I can say is that 2 weeks after the sealer was put in, I was in Florida
(on my way back) and my A/C was working fine.

How well did it work for you?

I thought that an honest comment or trying to help others was important to
this Newsgroup.

Unfunny jokes in reply to a posting is insulting. You"re probably of the
kind that thinks that Indians grow feathers here in Canada.

Maybe you can parler Francais avec Mr Letendre.  I heard French is spoken in
Northern Ont.  Is this true?
(Of course no trace thereof in Tronna.)

Wishful thinking! Remember this is German engineering! That means it will
take 4 times longer to get at and replace a part that needs to be
replaced.I saw a pic on the internet showing how the dash and wiring has
to be all removed. What a mess. The guy did it himself in 2 days...20 hours
of work.So I guess at $99 an hour,$3000 is about right.
