I have a '91 300E with an original Becker (Grand Prix?) radio/cassette.
I am trying to attach my iPod to it so I can listen to my music
collection on the road (this worked until recently). But the cassette
mechanism keeps ejecting the adapter from the Becker on its own
(although it plays standard cassettes fine). Seems like the mechanism
gets "caught" somewhere on the adapter shell and spits it out.
Has anyone tried modifying the OEM Becker radios to accept an output
from an external source? Many newer radios have an "AUX" jack for
external mp3 players. I've heard of specialist electronic shops finding
the source input circuit in old radios and hard-wiring a line cord to
it, with a mini-stereo headphone plug on the other end. Wonder if
anyone knows of a place that will do this?
I know many of you will simply advise me to replace the Becker with a
new radio, but I've never found an aftermarket radio that looks as nice
(original) or matches the car as well. I'm happy with my Becker! yeah I
know it's not as sophisticated as the newer units, but it sounds great
in my car :)

Did you know that an iPod can hold about $20,000 worth of music files?
Anyway, how about a portable 'FM Stereo Modulator' ?

I tried the iTrip and tossed it. Terrible sound quality, nearly
impossible to "tune" to your favorite frequency.

I don't know this particular Becker radio, but in most cases a cassette
player responds to the tension in the tape to read the end of tape. Try
comparing the tape-side of both a normal tape and your adapter, and see if
all holes are in the same place. If not, get your dremel and make the right
sized shape in the top of your adapter. Good chance you're in business.
When that does not work, there are many FM modulators that work great and
let you choose the frequency by means of a potentiometer.
Good luck,
Jannes

I have a 90 300SEL, the becker radio will not accept an cassette adapter. I
replaced the radio , (by passing the two amps in the rear and using the
original speaker system). the sound system sounds great...I replaced the
becker with a Kenwood. ..dash looks great with the Kenwood radio... Good
luck in modifiing that Becker radio....
