>How do I get the torque converter off w/ a seized engine?
Usually, pulling the pan and loosening the bearings will allow the engine to be
turned.

Are you trying to just remove the tranny from the car or do you need the
torque converter to come off with the tranny?

If the tranny and engine is still on the car, you can't really take out the
tranny unless you unbolt the torque converter... otherwise, it's a long long
slip out rearward and possibility of damaging the main pump.

On my 300D there was a plastic "plug" in the bottom of the comverter portion
of the trans housing which is there to apparently hold the converter in
place while installing or removing the trans. On my car you can simply turn
that plastic plug 90 degrees and pull it out. You can then pull the tranny
(if you wish) while leaving the converter bolted to the engine. If you
remove the tranny and leave the converter bolted to the companion flange on
the rear of the crankshaft, and do so carefully, you shouldn't have any
problem. Of course you need to lower the back of the engine/tranny assembly
to achieve this since you want to pull the tranny as straight away from the
engine as possibly. I'm not sure just how you remove the converter from the
companion flange after that but it sounds like you are more interested in
removing the tranny than breaking the engine loose. True?

Oh yes, I had forgotten to add "...the use of excessive force... is
authorized."

The plan is to remove tranny and TC then install them in my car that now has
a bad tranny. I have decided to pull the engine and tranny out of the donor
car, so i can work on it in the light. the hood and radiator are out (didn't
come w/ those parts)While the donor car is in front the shop I will rob any
other parts that look better than mine.
Thanks, lyndo

That's a great plan... keep all the spare parts or sell them.

I've loosened rather heavily siezed engines by removing the spark plugs
(injectors in this case) put some WD40 in each cylinder and let the engine
sit overnight. The next day, with the lower TC cover removed use a large
screwdriver or prybar to break the engine loose. I once put two 12v
batteries in series and hit the starter to achieve the same thing. Took
three or four hard jolts but that engine finally broke loose. Had been
frozen for some time. However, if water has somehow gotten into the
cylinders (read heavy rust) you could be in for a heck of a time trying to
turn the engine over enough to get all TC to flange bolts out.
Another thought: Did your present trans take a metal bath. If not you might
be able to switch just the trans and use your old TC. I did that on a 300D
we had and it worked fine. I trusted my old TC more than the one I got from
the wrecking yard although the used replacement tranny itself worked fine.
Good luck.
