Hi all,
I am hoping to put my 280sel engine into a new 450sel that I bought,
they are both the same year, 1978 ,
I am wondering if the tranny from the 450 will be the same or do  I need to
pull tranny and all from the 280?
It may be a dumb question, I am just hoping that I get lucky and they used
the same tranny on both cars.
Thanks ahead,
Jim in Texas

I believe the V-8 uses a three speed, the six a four speed. I believe
the rear axle ratios differ too - lower for the more powerful V-8 and
higher for the less robust but higher revving six.

IMHO you may be disappointed in the six's performance in this relatively
heavy car, in part due to the lower rear axle ratio. OK on a flat
freeway but not so good during acceleration.

Why not look for a used V-8 engine?

The 6 cyl is coming out of a 116, and although it isn't fast as the 450 is,
I am pretty happy overall with the gas consumption and reliability of the
280.
I have been told this car threw a rod, it smokes like heck, but then I had
another 450 that had a stuck valve with the same smoke, and the clatter
seems to be valve and not block noise.
The story will be told when I remove the valve cover.
In the meantime I will look for a 450, but I have this 6 all ready to go
more or less, as my 280 is rusting off the frame to the point where I am
replacing brake and fuel lines from rust(minnesota car).
Thanks ,
Jim

Perhaps you can find an axle ratio or code therefor on the differentials
of each car and then know for sure their respective axle ratios.

I will surely try and check that,
the tranny in the 280 is not all that great as it is, so it would be a
blessing if I could use that tranny .
Keep in mind, I have that whole other 116 to take parts from, including the
rear end.

what about the fuel system? the 450 has  continuous injection system and
doesn't the 6 cylinder have electronic?

I doubt that will make a difference, but I am pretty sure that this 280 has
cis also.
Even the brushes and the ignition box are the same.
The fuel lines line up as well.
