Basically, all the "L" models (L="Leicht" = light = sporty), which
currently include the SL, SLK, CL, CLK, and ML, lack the hood-mounted star.
There are, of course some exceptions. The G does not have a hood-mounted
star, but that would likely be because it could be damaged while driving
off-road. The C-Class coupe also does not have a hood-mounted star, but
then again, none of the coupes do. The new R-Class will likely not have a
hood-mounted star, but then again, its original concept was as a Gran
*Sport* Tourer. The same will hold for the B-Class (Compact *Sport*
Tourer). Basically, the only vehicles that now have hood-mounted stars are
the four-door sedans; everything else is consider a sporty model and the
hood-mounted star would not fit in its design.

Quite so. A-Class also has no standing star, but then the bonnet slopes
rather steeply.
