Can anyone tell me wether it is possible to use Valvoline Dexron 3 ATF fluid
in a '81 w123
250 sedan and if not what is recommended

sure you can ... but, being a synthetic blend, it will be much more
expensive than reg'lar dex II, which would be fine in your car.
