Is their a special trick, (hidden screws, clips etc) to remove the
instrument panel to get at the dimmer switch. Can the switch be
repaired or must it be replaced.  Thanks in advance for any help.

they make 2 hooks that look like mini ice block hooks.
                      OR
pull neg battery cable off then get 2 coat hangers bend one end of both
at a 90 degree angle.<about an inch long>
.
slide the hanger between the cluster and the dash. one on the left one
on the right.
turn the bent hooks so they catch the back of the cluster and pull it
out SLOWLY.
the reason for pulling the battery is on my older <real old> i hit the
clock wire and it grounded on something.
why take chances.

now get ready to unplug all sorts of plugs
get your self 2 new dash bulbs .
i just jumped <bypassed> the dimmer on mine.
first time i 3 years i could see how fast i was going.

on there HI setting there not real bright but if you already have the
dimmer put it in.

it also runs all the heater button lights
ETC.

the case, minus a few cans!

Poolman
Thanks very much for the info. Who would think it just is a push fit
in a tight place.
When you push in the wire hooks how far in do you push them before you
turn to lock then pull? Are you hooking just the outer lip of the
cluster or is it the assembly body you hook onto that would be farther
in than the lip? Perhaps just pushing them in slowly, trying to turn
them now and then till they do turn?

I just took a look at mine for you.  My cluster has a habit of working
it's way out a bit, so I push it back in once in awhile.  Always
wondered what was supposed to keep it in.  I guess now we know from
poolman that its supposed to just stay stuck in.

Anyway, here's what I found.  Around the perimeter, there is a very
small lip, maybe 1/16" at most, right at the front.  Then, after that,
the depth varies.  About 5/8" or so at the top center, getting thicker
as you move down to the sides, then very thick, maybe 1 1/2" at the
bottom.. I'd try to pull it from the top center and/or a few inchs
either side of top center by getting the hook in about an inch,
turning, then pulling it back.

Good luck!

BTW, let me us know how u make out with the dimmer.  Mine still works,
but only on one good spot, near max bright.

i had the hooks but as i recall go for the center
& push it pack till you can turn <rotate> them and pull about 1 1/2 in.

i just put a paper clop to join the copper strips together.
but then you can't dim them <not that
you will want to>
get the new bulbs!!!!!!!!!!

the case, minus a few cans!

A tip of the helmet (hat) to you both. The cluster came out first try.
It has little flat springs dommed up to they increase friction on the
cluster. Those springs, I think about 5 or 6, are mounted around the
perimeter of the hole in the dash. Great tip guys, saves a trip to the
dealer.

As to the dimmer; a spring was broken  so I just jumped across the two
brass bars on the back of the switch with an arrow staple, just the
right width to go in the holes, a drop of solder on each end and
that?s it. I was so anxious to see the dashlights that, on a bright
and sunny day, I covered the dash and myself with a dark fabric.
Presto, lights.

Drive on.

And if you're not satisfied with that solution -
try this mod - Hmmm.

Conrad:
Interesting lingo on that site. You may have read between the lines on
my chosen fix that it was the easy way out. I farm. No time for the
fancy stuff. "It?s only a temporary fix unless it works".
Thanks for the link.

The "lingo" is due to this being the Phillipines MB club. Don't get
me started on the language situation there - nearly 7,000 islands
ranging from 10 sq. meters on up, and apparently a language or
dialect for each one - ouch! Friend of mine was the president of this
group, and they're quite dedicated and knowledgable.

In the last 20 years, there's been a lot of improvement in
electronics - and some of the new electronics can be utilized
to the benefit of some of our older cars. I was kind of intrigued
by this one, because I spent a bit of time going from no dash
lights, to carefully taking apart the variable resistor (rheostat
for those of us old fogies) and using a combination of weak
acid (Coca-cola) and careful brushing to clean up the resistance
coil and wiper - only to have dash lights that were adjustable
between dim and dimmer (dim and dimmer - wasn't that a Jim
Carey/Jeff Daniels movie?)

I empathize with the farming situation - my parents handed me
over to my grandfather's farm every summer - which is probably
the only reason I can eat a potatoe, an ear of corn, or a steak now,
and REALLY appreciate it. On the flip side, my grandfather
wouldn't have wasted time taking the dash out - he'd have
just thrown his old heavy chrome flashlight between the seats,
and popped it on when he wanted to see the dash. I know this
for a fact, because that's exactly how we spent many nights
hauling hay or feed with the dashlights on his truck out ;-)

Actually, according to my friend, there are, but
they're very, very small.

Cheers,
