The Mercedes-Benz diesel V8
STUTTGART, Germany - Mercedes-Benz has developed a new V8 diesel
engine for its E420 CDI sedan.
The new engine incorporates common-rail direct injection, piezo
injectors, twin turbocharging with variable turbine geometry,
electrically controlled exhaust gas recirculation and a water-cooled
intercooler.
The engine is made using sand-cast aluminum. In order to minimize noise
and vibration, the engine is mounted on a bedplate and incorporates a
balancer shaft, which rotates in the opposite direction of the
crankshaft. The cylinders are set at a 75-degree angle.
With a performance of 314 horsepower at 3,600 rpm and 538 pound-feet of
torque at 2,200 rpm, the new 4.0-liter engine generates 20-percent more
power and 30-percent more torque than Mercedes' previous 8-cylinder CDI
power plant. The car accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 6 seconds, and
claims a top speed of 150 mph.
The new engine will debut in the E-Class in fall 2005, and it is
expected to be introduced in other Mercedes-Benz models later.
What this means to you: Those stats could be the beginning of a
beautiful relationship. Now if only they were available to North
America as crate engines...the possibilities boggle the mind.

That's a screamer!
Compare this new engine at 78.5 HP/ L. with the old 617 diesels (c. 1980
- 85) which made 40 HP / L., which was acceptable back then - for both
diesel and gas engines.
The power output per liter has been doubled from the same fuel
consumption. That's progress.

The power is certainly impressive, but I think we will have to wait and
see how many of these aluminum eight cylinders are still banging away
with 600,000 miles on them, before we can really call it progress...

The new M-B 3.0L aluminum V-6 diesel (sold as a "320") is a more
balanced and , IMHO, a better and cleaner engine than this V-8 brute.
