I'm working on a mid-life crisis and looks like I can afford an SLK230
between the years 1998 and 2000.

My biggest concern is maintenance. I'm used to the cost of maintenance
for american cars. (i.e. $25 for oil change, $150 per axle for for
brakes...that sort of thing)

Can you guys and gals offer any feedback on the cost to own an SLK230?

Thanks in advance,

James

Everything is going to be much more expensive.  it's a mercedes.

I own a '98 SLK230 which I bought new.  While the extended warranty was
in effect I had no major problems and scheduled maintenance was free.
Now that the warranties expired, I would say that your maintenance
estimates for an american car would have to be doubled.  Should you need
any repairs, the cost of parts and labor would be relatively high but
pretty much in line with those of other Mercedes models. Take advantage
of your crisis and enjoy your driving.

Maintenance need not be that expensive if you stay away from the dealers. I
had the brakes done on my 190E and SL320 recently and the cost was about the
same as an american or import car at a local independent shop. Other parts
are readily available from after market suppliers.
You are OK as long you don't have to buy parts only available from from the
MB dealer.

I'm on my 4th MB, an SL320 bought in San Diego. I took it to the local
dealer for some minor repairs and general inspection: major mistake,
and unnecessarily expensive.

Have since found a reputable and reliable aftermarket MB specialist,
and maintenance/repair costs are down considerably.  Your phone book,
if you live in a fairly large city, will probably have several such
specialists.
