How much smoke is normal when the engine is in compression going downhill? I
notice smoke whenever on compression, but never at any other time. Engine is
616 in 240D.

Smoke is not normal.  You are probably ready for a new set of valve seals,
perhaps guides, too.  Piston rings last a long time so unless you have
really high mileage on the car, your rings are probably OK.
