Somewhere I saw a post that this car cost $58,000 new. Seems high - could
that be in today's dollars?

Bill,

According to MBNA's price lists, the prices of the 560 SL were as
follows.

As of November 1, 1985:

560 SL, Price, East and Gulf Coasts: $48,200
560 SL, Price, West Coast: $48,600

There were only three options at extra cost:

Orthopedic Backrest, Right Manual: $75
Orthopedic Backrest, Left Manual: $75
Heated Seats: $385

As of February 18, 1986:

560 SL, Price, East and Gulf Coasts: $51,000
560 SL, Price, West Coast: $51,420

There were only three options at extra cost:

Orthopedic Backrest, Right Manual: $80
Orthopedic Backrest, Left Manual: $80
Heated Seats: $405

As of May 15, 1986:

560 SL, Price, East and Gulf Coasts: $53,300
560 SL, Price, West Coast: $53,730

There were only three options at extra cost:

Orthopedic Backrest, Right Manual: $85
Orthopedic Backrest, Left Manual: $85
Heated Seats: $420

If you take a West Coast price from the May price list and add all
options, you'll get $54,420. After taxes, $58,000 doesn't seem that
unreasonable.

Best regards,
Danny
