Suggest you move the shifter from P to N and back and try it again.
If that helps the "neutral start safety switch" needs to be checked.

If the neutral start safety switch is not guilty the next consideration
is the battery, the battery connections, the engine's ground to the car
and finally the starter itself.

A final possibility is the ignition switch and the car's alarm system
which might have an engine immobilizer.
