240D loud hum when turning left

This started recently. If I turn slowly there is no noise. If I go quickly
it sounds like a hum made a rubber wheel
on a thin plate. The wheel on the road need be turned only about 20 degrees
to generate the noise. I jacked up the car and there is no play at all in
the wheel bearings. I crawled underneath and saw only one likely thing.
There is an arm, that the spring rests on, from the wheel to the chassis and
it has a bolt (about 5/8" diameter) passing through a hub on the end of the
arm and then through two plates attached to the chassis. The ends of the
section between the two plates each has a black rubber or plastic gasket or
seal or similar and one of them is breaking up. This may have nothing to do
with the problem but it was the only thing I could see that wasn't normal.

Wish this system would allow real sketches. Doing them via text is a real
chore.

Help appreciated.

Have a shop check it; fixing this is not a bit of casual work with a
wrench or two.

Thanks TGL and GS.

Curiously the last twice I have taken the car out, there was no hum.
However,
I'll take your advice GS and top up the PS reservoir. Will report back about
how this goes.

Thanks again and enjoy the new week :-)

Hello again Guenter.

I have used the car numerous times since my last post and the noise appears
only occasionally. I took the cap off the steering pump reservoir and it's
very full,
so I guess we have to think further???

Back to square one guys? What's the next suggestion? Possibly something in
the
steering linkage?

TIA

Can you get this hum to occur if the car is not moving (e.g. just turning
the wheel while in park)?  The reason I ask is that I had a rather unusual
noise when turning left on my '95 E320 after rotating the tires and
replacing the brake rotors/pads.  It was almost like a grinding noise.  At
first I thought it was a bad pad, but on further inspection it turned out to
be a very minor difference in the rim.  There is very little clearance
between the brake caliper and the rim and the difference was enough to
sometimes cause the inside of the rim to rub the outside of the caliper (you
could see on the rim where the two had rubbed together).  After switching
rims around the noise went away.

Thanks Josh for the info.

The noise comes on only when I am turning and not at all when stationary. I
have not
made any adjustment to the brakes recently and a few months ago, when I
looked, the
brakes still had lots of "meat" on them. The tires were rotated about six
months ago and
this noise started only a few weeks ago.

Puzzling....

Thanks Josh for the info.

The noise comes on only when I am turning and not at all when stationary or
just crawling along.

when I
looked, the brakes still had lots of lining left. The tires were rotated
about six
months ago and this noise started only a few weeks ago.

Puzzling....
