i recently purchased a pretty mint 190e at a car aution mostly as an
impulse buy, it was dirt cheap and this is my 1st car so i wasnt wanting
to blow a lot of cash before i had learnt to drive properly.
i should mention this is a 190e 2liter 1991 uk, in case there is any
regional differences between my home country and what i assume is a lage
majority of american readers.
anyway ive a couple of quick questions, 1st it looks like the car had an
alarm fitted but i didnt get a keyfob, were alarms as standard and if i
took it to a merc dealer would they be able to help me out.
second i havent played with the rear locks much but when i sat back there
i wasnt able to open the rear doors form the inside, are there safety
locks
and third there is a apparently little throttle lag, is this normal or ive
read it may be a good idea to replace the rubber hoses, any comments
thanks for your time

As far as I know, UK 190E's were not fitted as standard with a Mercedes
alarm system. My '91 1.8 has a Piranha alarm/immobiliser including interior
monitoring sensors, bt this is an aftermarket fitment as far as I know.
If you have an alarm and no fob, you will probably struggle to get one for
it Best bet would be to go to an alarm specialist and get them to have a
look...should imagine you'd have to have a new system fitted though
Good luck with that..and enjoy the car ;-)

That takes care of item 1.
Item 2, rear doors. I think there are child locks. Look in the door near
the latch.
Item 3. Somebody else. Is your car automatic?
Enjoy. Nice little motor. Robust.
BTW, from the responses I have seen here it looks like the US never got
anything less than the 2.3 l.

no its a 5 speed manual, to be honest the throttle lag isnt that big a
deal, its not very long and kind of makes it fun.
have to say that compaired the loathsome Renault megan, i was driving
before, its great, quirky enough to be interesting and damn well put
together.

The 84 190D 2.2 I have does not have the child lock. This is US model
though. Can't you open doors from either side? One door malfunction is
possible but if both doors can't, there is probably something else.
There may be child lock in UK (Europe) market. I don't know.

I had a 1990 2l auto (in the uk) - it was factory fitted with a scorpion
alarm system - like you, I never got the alarm fob and in the end I didn't
bother getting one (although I would have gone to an alarm specialist rather
than a main dealer, as they don't have a clue when it comes to older
mercedes cars)
Mine had a child lock switch next to the gear stick which would prevent the
rear doors from opening from the inside. If yours doesn't have this switch,
then it may be a vacuum problem.
There is a bit of latency in the acceleration - and it is fun!
Cheers
Andy

Isn't that an rear-electric-window lock?

thanks thats very useful, i might look into a keyfob more just for
completeness than anything else. depending on how i like it i may keep
this car for some time as a daily driver when i can get reasonable
insurance on an older big engined classic next year.
just to confirm the throttle lag is ok and doesnt need to be fixed. ive
booked it in for a checkup at a local garage, to keep it healthy and
get ready for winter, any suggestions on what i should get done apart from
checking the brakes and changing the oil would also be a help

i have 190 fitted with scorpion alarm when i got it, this had no fob with
it. it was just a matter of unplugging the unit from the harness and taking
it to an auto alarm shop, where they programed a fob for it. worth the £15
charge and done in 10 minutes.

Child safety lock-out switch is on the console, by window switches.
Try new plugs, and distributor cap, and rotor for lag.
