The door wood is the easy bit.
Using a small sharp pointy thing, bry back the black plastic
thingy under the door catch. Now start undoing all the screws
you can find (3 or 4 total) and the door panel is off.
Befor you get to that point, either the first screw or two
into this you'll have the wood off.

thanks very much. are there any tips on removing the dash and console wood?
i'd also like to replace the gear indicator if that's not too much trouble.

Just wait a bit. It usually delaminates and just falls off.
Or if you're in a hurry it's held on by small nuts from behind. Remove the
glovebox door and you get access to some. Remove the instrument cluster
( http://articles.mbz.org/instrument/renew/ ) to get some more then remove the
center console (where the heat controls are) to get the rest.
