My dashboard temperature indicator light seems to have burned out. Can
it be replaced by me (enthusiastic, but limited skills) or is it another
opportunity for my dealer to finance a mortgage payment? Advice
gratefully appreciated.

I had the dealer replace ALL the bulbs on '97 E320 - $140 labor - it's
done and cosmetically perfect.

I wonder if they actually did anything ;~) Seems like the proverbial wall job.

Depends. To change bulbs in the odometer you have to remove it. If you
don't have an adjustable steering wheel you have to remove airbag and
wheel. The wheel needs a special tool. The normal tool from the
supermarket is no help at all.
The price of all bulbs is around 25 EUR. Change them all. 6 years /
100000 km is a long time for a bulb.
