I need to replace the sunroof motor on my '86 420SEL. The question I have is: How do I separate the guide tube that the sunroof cable goes through from the motor assembly? I have removed the 2 bolts holding the motor to the frame of the car but I can't see what is holding the guide tube to the motor assembly. I have also removed the sunroof headliner to facilitate removing the cable (if necessary) and lubricating the various parts while I'm at it. Thank you. The end of the tube slides into a clip. But you are not going to remove the tube until you remove the cable from the gear drive. What is wrong with the motor?!? Thank you. Thanks for the info. Much appreciated. Actually, nothing is wrong with the motor itself. What happened is that some pieces of the spiral wound casing that wraps around the multi-stranded inner core of the cable broke off and caused the cable to jam inside the drive unit. This caused the fuse to blow but saved the motor. I'm worried that the cable fragments are still inside the drive unit and could cause future jams if they get lodged somewhere. Before putting in the new cable, I figured this would be a good time to open up the unit to clean out any fragments, inspect the fiber gear, and lubricate the inner workings. T.C. As Karl says, the cable is detached from the drive unit by two clips (one in each end of the drive unit). After putting it all together, the unit should be adjusted: Inside the drive unit are two switches, which sense the position of the roof (or rather the drive cable to the roof). There is a white knob on the drive unit, which can be pulled out to "adjustment position", in which it disengages from the drive cable. The drive unit gear can then be turned by the knob independently from the sunroof. Turn it several turns cw and ccw and listen when the microswitches are actuated. With the sunroof closed, the drive unit shall be aligned just in between the the two switches actuating. Then push in the white knob and see if it the sunroof closes correctly after having been opened or lifted. Readjust if necessary.
