Anyone got any idea why my 260e 124 (1989 model petrol, England.
109000miles )series drops out of cruise control? Doesn't seem to like to be
engaged a low speeds either, drops out more often. When doing 70mph, will
surge forward first a couple of MPH, engage, and then drop out after 10
minutes.

Electronic controller unit needs to be rebuilt.
See a rebuilder site: http://gdl-online.com/begin.html
Must be others closer to or in the UK.

Not uncommon. The usual fix is to pull out the cruise control amplifier and resolder
every joint you can find. This fixes 99% of them.

While I agree that the CC amp is the most likely cause do not overlook a
faulty brake switch. When you have checked that, take a look here:-

It's basically how to mend a CC module on the kitchen table.
