Has anyone replaced the fatory stereo?  Would like one with a direct
input for a satellite radio or ipod.  Have tried other methods, not
happy.  Are there units that can adapt to the existing MB speakers
etc...

Dont care too much about the steering wheel controls.

If you don't care about steering wheel control then you can simply swap out
the head unit with the one you want. No special sound processor needed and
you just need a wire harness adapter.

Is it not possible to feed a signal from an Ipod or other accessory into
the input in the unit intended for the multi-cd changer?

Nope... not really as they use fiber optic for communication.
