Thanks Roland, but squeaking is consistant, hot or cold, hence my
thought it was bearings. I'll be pulling it tonite to see if it is
stiff, scored shaft, etc. I think tension is right, but will retry
it. BTW, I should have said belt is relativly new, I changed it
several months ago but haven't driven the Benz much....

Well,
Definitly bearings. Sprayed with silicone spray, squeaking stopped,
know it's a temp fix, time for a new alternator.

Call around, there's usually a decent sourece of cheap
rebuild bosch units locally it turns out.
I had my dads allegedly brilliant and reliable
mecjhanic "repair" an alternator 4 times for $440
once on a 108. I rebuilt BOSCH was $180 I found
out some time later, and they're childsplay to install.
