Alternator Light?

Hi Gang,

I have an '86 190 European model.

An orange light in the cluster on the far right is flashing occaisonally,
and this light has no markings.   Coincidentally, I have a lot of
squeaking that seems to be coming from the alternator.

Problem is that my shop manual doesn't show an orange light in this
location, particularily one that isn't marked.

Anyone know if the European models had an alternator light in conjunction
with the battery warning light?

If not my only assumption is that this light was put in the wrong spot and
belongs in the ABS indicator position, which is right beside it.   I know
that the dash had been removed at some point in it's life.

Thanks!

It is possible it is put in wrong location. Check your alternator with a
voltmeter... anything above 13.5 at idle is good.

Squeaking is belt... if it is old, time to replace it.

Thanks for the advice, Tiger.  Belt is brand new.   Don't think it
could be old bearings in the alternator causing the noise?

Perhaps. But if squeaking occurs mainly with cold machine and/or at cold
wheather the belt has not enough tension. It should not give in more
than 1 cm or 1/2''  if you press it in the middle with a thumb with full
power (equ 20 kg or 40 lb load). Rubber is shortening with raising
temperature.

Thanks Roland, but squeaking is consistant, hot or cold, hence my
thought it was bearings.    I'll be pulling it tonite to see if it is
stiff, scored shaft, etc.   I think tension is right, but will retry
it.   BTW, I should have said belt is relativly new, I changed it
several months ago but haven't driven the Benz much....

Well,

Definitly bearings.   Sprayed with silicone spray, squeaking stopped,
know it's a temp fix, time for a new alternator.

Call around, there's usually a decent sourece of cheap
rebuild bosch units locally it turns out.

I had my dads allegedly brilliant and reliable
mecjhanic "repair" an alternator 4 times for $440
once on a 108. I rebuilt BOSCH was $180 I found
out some time later, and they're childsplay to install.
